The Ministry of Electricity announced, on Monday, the imminent start of a project to establish a solar power plant in Basra.
The ministry said in a statement, "The Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, held a meeting with the director of the French company Total for renewable energies affairs in Iraq, Khaled Al-Abdali, in the presence of the Director General of the Planning and Studies Department and the Director General of the Technical Department in the ministry."
The statement added, "The company's procedures were discussed regarding the project to establish a solar power plant at a rate of 1,000 megawatts in the Artawi oil field in Basra Governorate, which it is hoped to start implementing after the approval of the Council of Ministers last week."
The company's director for renewable energies said, according to the statement, that "in line with the ministry's plans to diversify energy sources and strengthen the capabilities of the national system with electric energy through renewable sources, we affirm the company's readiness to start and start working through a promising partnership with electricity in such projects, and it will be concerned with pressing implementation and completion ceilings."
