On the occasion of World Refugee Day, which falls on June 20 of each year, a report by (The National) news website dealt with the difficulties and dangers faced by Iraqi immigrants who seek to reach Europe through an arduous journey that takes them from Turkey to Belarus, Lithuania, and then Poland, during which they spend thousands of dollars in search of A new life there to escape difficult conditions, unemployment, poverty and lack of services.
The report, which was translated by Al-Mada, stated that “Muhammad Hussein, 30, is one of the lucky immigrants who were able to overcome the dangers of a difficult journey after he found a place for him to settle within the borders of a camp in Germany two years ago.”
Hussein said, "I was born again, although we are still living in a camp. Life here is different from what I used to suffer in my own country."
The report continued, "Hussein was forced to leave Iraq for security reasons and cases of violence the country has witnessed in recent years, as well as other reasons related to unemployment, the lack of job opportunities and the lack of services provided."
And he pointed out, “This, after enduring a perilous journey that took him from Turkey to Belarus, then Lithuania and Poland, until he arrived in Germany in the summer of 2021. He said that he spent 3 thousand dollars to complete this journey.”
“It was a hard and dangerous journey, but getting here is worth it,” Hussein said.
And the report added, “Since that time, he has sought refuge in a camp designated to provide assistance and support for those seeking asylum.”
He explained, "Despite the hardships that Hussein endured, his persistence and morale allowed him to find good company among the rest of the camp's inmates."
Hussein says, "Life here is not easy, but I found hope and support among my fellow immigrants."
Hussein continued, “The camp provided us with basic services, education, and opportunities to integrate into German society. I am now learning the language and trying to rebuild my life.”
The report emphasized that “Hussein spends his days wading through an unfamiliar culture and language, but his insistence on rebuilding his life helps him to continue. Despite the hardships, he is still optimistic and found reassurance in the friendships he made inside the camp, and he dreams of the day when he can practice his life in a new society.”
The report added, "Amira, a mother of two, decided four years ago to leave Iraq to join her family in Germany, and traveled to Turkey and from there by sea to Greece."
Amira said, "It was a real ordeal, starting from a truck inside which we gathered like a herd of sheep, and then on a dangerous journey in a boat that we crossed to Greece and walked barefoot for hours in the forest."
And the report added, “Amira, after spending eight months in Greece, settled in Germany with her brother, and now she enjoys residency and works in a kindergarten.”
The report added, however, that "the story of the immigrants, Hussein and Amira, is very different and contradicts what the immigrant, Ahmed al-Dulaimi, met on his journey, which became an example of the great suffering and the enormous challenges that immigrants face in their quest for a better life and future."
Al-Dulaimi, 26, as with many others, embarked on a dangerous journey through several countries with the hope of finding stability and opportunities in Europe.
He pointed out, "Al-Dulaimi's long journey, which lasted nearly seven months, was fraught with dangers, as he passed through treacherous paths and faced huge obstacles in his hopeless quest for a better life."
The report indicated that "al-Dulaimi, since the start of his journey in July 2021, hoping to reach Europe, returned again to Iraq to his city in Ramadi, after he faced difficulties, lost his money, and was arrested by security services in Lithuania."
Al-Dulaimi said, “After this experience, my life turned upside down,” and Al-Qarir continues, “By spending approximately $2,700 in the hope of fulfilling his dream of emigrating to Europe, Al-Dulaimi traveled to the city of Minsk, the capital of Belarus, where he joined a group of immigrants who are also trying to reach to Europe.”
Al-Dulaimi stated, "Our dangerous journey was punctuated by turbulent seas and treacherous land borders, as we often rely on smugglers, enduring unimaginable hardships and hardships."
The report stated, "The security authorities in Lithuania arrested al-Dulaimi and his companions as soon as they arrived in that country, and then decided to return to Iraq, where he now lives with a sense of despair and shattered dreams."
Al-Dulaimi says, "They kept transferring us from one camp to another, and then put us in a prison. I could not bear the situation, and that is why I decided to return when the Iraqi government started operating flights back to the country."
Al-Dulaimi continued, “I was hoping to live a better life, but I was not lucky and I feel frustrated.”
Al-Dulaimi went on, “I risked my life and crossed mountains, seas, and borders, in order to finally face the rejection of my acceptance as a refugee.”
