{International: Efrat News} The Pentagon announced, Thursday, that the United States is working to deploy additional forces in the Middle East, including thousands of Marines {Marines}.
The Pentagon said in a statement that the US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, has ordered the deployment of part of the amphibious readiness group "Bataan" in the area of responsibility of the US Central Command "CENTCOM".
The commander of US Central Command, Gen. Michael "Eric" Korella, said the additional forces would add "unique capabilities" to the region to "further protect the free flow of international trade and support the international rules-based order."
He added in a statement that US Central Command "is committed to defending freedom of navigation in our area of responsibility that includes some of the world's most important waterways."
The new move came after the Pentagon said earlier this week that it would send F-35 and F-16 fighter jets to the Middle East, as well as the USS Thomas Hodner guided missile destroyer.
"We will continue to work with allies and partners committed to the free flow of trade to take appropriate and coordinated action against threats to this fundamental principle of the rules-based international order," the statement said.
Washington announced, in May, that it would strengthen its military presence in the Gulf.
At the time, John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, said, "The Department of Defense will take a series of moves to strengthen our defense posture," noting that "details about these reinforcements will be issued in the coming days."
