    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Monday (August 7, 2023), the Parliamentary Legal Committee criticized a draft law submitted by the Council of Ministers, while confirming that the draft law violates the provisions of the Iraqi constitution.
Committee member Muhammad Anouz said, in a statement to (Baghdad Today) agency, that “the draft law submitted by the Council of Ministers regarding the abolition of the Property Claims Commission violates the Iraqi constitution,” noting that “the constitution affirmed that the Property Claims Commission continues its work as an independent body in coordination with the judicial authority.” And the executive bodies in accordance with the law, and that their connection is with the House of Representatives.
Al-Anouz also indicated that "the House of Representatives has the right to dissolve the commission by a two-thirds majority of its members," stressing that "the Council of Ministers' move is unconstitutional."
He pointed out that "the Property Claims Commission is one of the important institutions, and work with it is still important for the sake of the rights of many citizens and others, and the tendency to abolish the Commission is surprising."
A member of the Legal Committee warned that "the absence of this body means the loss and absence of many citizens' rights, and for this we will work according to our legislative powers to prevent this cancellation."
It is noteworthy that the Property Claims Commission Law works to guarantee the rights of Iraqi citizens whose real estate has been expropriated in violation of the law, and that it does not apply to non-Iraqis.
