    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (August 29, 2023), professor of international relations at the University of Baghdad, Alaa Mustafa, said that Iraq was able to return to the international community, despite the security, economic and political conditions it went through.
Mustafa said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", that "Iraq has achieved, during the past periods, great successes in returning to the international community and made progress in building balanced political and economic relations with all regional and international parties."
He added, "Iraq has gradually returned to its regional and international weight and played an important role in many mediations between countries, and this confirms its effective return to the international community, just as the visits of foreign officials to Baghdad, which have become almost daily, are evidence of Iraq playing its pivotal role in Region".
Iraq's moves in the recent period have aroused a lot of interest, especially at the regional level. During the recent period, Iraq began to activate and expand cooperation with a number of Arab countries, but the pace of this cooperation has accelerated significantly.
Perhaps the most recent development in this context is the visit of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to Iraq at the invitation of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, who had previously pledged to strengthen his country's foreign relations on the basis of the principle of mutual respect and common interests, not to engage in the policy of axes, and to follow the policy of friendship and cooperation with everyone.
Al-Sudani also pledged to continue the dialogue between Iraq and the countries of the international coalition regarding the presence of international forces in Iraq, according to what is determined by the need and requirements for the continuity of security and stability, "in order to preserve Iraq's sovereignty and unity, and to prepare for the draft parliamentary election law and the oil and gas project."
Al-Sudani said that his government's approach is based on "a program that includes 23 axes, the most prominent of which is strengthening Iraq's relations with countries on the basis of the principle of mutual respect and common interests, especially with neighboring countries, the Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab countries, and not allowing Iraq to be a corridor or a headquarters for aggression against other countries." and to demand reciprocal treatment from other countries.
A previous study by the American Brookings Institution indicated that the Gulf monarchies did not invest significant energy and resources in Iraq, while their American and European partners faced difficulties in paving the way for more Gulf support and investments for Iraq as they attempted to stabilize the country during the anti-ISIS campaign in recent years.
The study added that, with American support and leadership, Iraq could reintegrate into the Arab world and reactivate a relationship with the Gulf based on common interests to help revive the economy, thus reducing its dependence on Iran in the process.
