Specialists in the environmental aspect called for the necessity of putting hot environmental issues on the table of the next climate conference scheduled to be held in the Emirates at the end of this year, in order to invest its decisions and include them in the final recommendations of the conference. This came during the national dialogue workshop to prepare for the 28th Climate Summit for civil society organizations, the private sector, academics and the media, which was held in Baghdad.
The participants reviewed several files with the aim of activating and presenting them to take their path to implementation, most notably discussing the outcomes of the previous climate conference, COP27, to draw a road map for the most important issues that will be addressed in the next conference, which will be held in the Emirates at the end of this year, in addition to reviewing the climate financing opportunities available internationally, and the most important documents that were worked on. Iraq must implement the declared national commitments, in addition to the document on technological needs, capacity building, training, and transparency issues.
The head of the “Together for the Protection of Humanity and the Environment” association, Saadia Falih Hassoun, told “Al-Sabah”: The most important recommendations that came out of the workshop were to invest in the upcoming climate summit to attract foreign investments, especially in the field of clean energy, because Iraq possesses raw materials for manufacturing solar panels for Providing them at lower prices to consumers and ensuring their purchase by citizens while providing incentives to convert to solar energy, as well as transferring modern technology and assisting the private sector in providing an attractive legal environment for work in the field of clean energies, in addition to the need for the international community to commit to taking practical measures and providing financial and technical support. And technology for Iraq because it is one of the five countries most affected by climate change.
She added that the recommendations also included paying special attention to the marshes file because they are on the World Heritage List, especially since they are suffering from 95 percent drought today, which has caused a loss and threat to biodiversity and the livelihoods of the residents of these areas and forced them to migrate to other places to search for job opportunities and secure their livelihoods. In addition to supporting and assisting the efforts of the international community for Iraq to obtain its water shares from neighboring countries in accordance with international laws governing riparian countries, in addition to the importance of empowering youth and women to actively participate in climate action at the upcoming climate summit to convey the needs of these groups and support creative initiatives. Encouraging innovation, in addition to the need to build the capabilities of civil society organizations and introduce international financing opportunities in a transparent manner, in addition to providing technical and financial support to support youth initiatives that contribute to a resilient future that is more able to adapt to the effects of climate change.
In turn, the head of the Nineveh Prosperity Organization for the Development of Agriculture and the Environment, Moayad Abdullah Muhammad, told Al-Sabah: The sustainable development goals lie in shifting towards a green economy and reducing carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, stressing that concerted government efforts with civil society organizations will ensure a gradual shift towards Better, reduce imports and waste of water, and limit the effects of desertification.
He pointed out that it is necessary to ask the international community and put pressure on the countries participating in the next climate conference to do justice to Iraq and increase the water shares allocated to it in accordance with international agreements, so that the conference can be a guarantor of those agreements, provided that they are accompanied by real numbers for the water need, indicating that this issue falls on It is the responsibility of the Ministries of Planning, Housing, Water Resources, and Agriculture, so that we can reach convincingness about Iraq’s point of view and its water needs.
He explained that there are several steps that can be followed to secure water after the scarcity crisis that the country experienced during the current season, namely diplomatic pressure on upstream countries by increasing the water share through the international community, moving towards the European Union, direct contact with international organizations, and knocking on the doors of the United Nations, in addition to Internal pressure through local organizations.
