An Israeli press report stated that the Kurdistan Region is currently facing an unprecedented crisis under pressure from Baghdad, Tehran and Ankara, 6 years after it organized the independence referendum, a period that is completely inconsistent with the current conditions.
The Israeli newspaper “Jerusalem Post” stated in a report that “the Kurdistan Region contributed mainly in 2017 to defeating ISIS, and now it enjoys stability and security, as there are economic, investment and tourism opportunities.”
The Israeli newspaper added: “But nature hates a vacuum, and that is why many of the region’s neighbors are jealous of the region’s success and are trying to undermine it.”
The report spoke of “a series of events over the past days and months, which represent a threat to the Kurdistan Region, at a time when the region is witnessing a division between the two main parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.”
He explained, “The Kurdistan Democratic Party is considered the strongest and most dominant in Erbil, and enjoys friendly and strong relations with Ankara, and commercial and financial movement across the border. However, this did not prevent Ankara from launching a military campaign in northern Iraq that often harms the Kurds.”
Türkiye and Iran
The Israeli report noted that Turkey says it is fighting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which it describes as a “terrorist,” but the Turkish raids and strikes against the party’s members raise concerns among Kurdish civilians and other components in the region, especially in Dohuk and its neighbourhood.
At the same time, Iran is threatening a military operation against the region, as the report pointed out that “Tehran maintains good relations with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, more than the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and it has increased its pressure on the armed Iranian opposition factions, a position partly linked to the anniversary of the killing of the Kurdistan Democratic Party.” Iranian Mahsa Amini.”
Baghdad pressure
At the same time, the report indicated that “the Kurdistan Region is facing pressure from Baghdad,” explaining that “this includes the threat to the Kurds in Kirkuk, which federal forces controlled in 2017, in addition to threats related to the budget and others.”
He stated that “the Kurdistan Region implemented all its obligations and dealt with Baghdad with complete transparency, which was confirmed by the President of the Region, Nechirvan Barzani.”
According to the Israeli report, in light of all these factors combined, Erbil faces a major challenge in its relations with Baghdad and with regard to pressure from Iran and Turkey, noting that the United States and Western powers often supported the region in the past, and the region also has economic relations with countries. Gulf, however, the region is isolated in northern Iraq, and it serves as a strategic hinge around which Iran, Turkey, and Baghdad surround.
The report concluded by saying, “The United States is using the region to supply its forces in eastern Syria, while Iran and Turkey are exposing the American military presence in Syria. They also want to put pressure on Erbil, because several American facilities are located near Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, and at its airport.”
