    {Local: Al-Furat News} A member of the Parliamentary Water Committee revealed that the cost of injecting and maintaining the Mosul Dam in the north of the country meant.
    Thaer al-Jubouri told {Al-Furat News}: “For years, an amount of one billion dinars has been spent annually outside the budget to inject and maintain the Mosul Dam,” noting that “the company supervising the maintenance of the Mosul Dam is an American company.”
    He pointed out that "water imports are not large and do not pose a threat, but we are demanding our water rights from neighboring countries."
    A report published by the American "National Geographic" network last month raised fears of a repeat of the disaster in the Libyan city of Derna in Iraq, where the "most dangerous dam" in the world is located, but the Ministry of Water Resources dispelled those fears and confirmed the continuation of maintenance work on it.
    The report discussed the repercussions that the collapse of the Mosul Dam in northern Iraq could have, both in terms of human losses as well as those related to the archaeological sites that spread on both sides of the Tigris River, where the dam is located.
    The Mosul Dam is Iraq's largest water reservoir, but it is built on plaster foundations and requires regular cement injections to fill cracks in its structure.
    In 2016, the US Embassy in Baghdad warned its citizens and asked them to prepare to leave the country in the event of what it described as a disaster if the dam collapsed.
    The warning came two years after ISIS took control of Mosul and other parts of Iraq, which obstructed maintenance operations on the dam.
    In the years since this warning, the Italian government has helped repair the Mosul Dam, and continues to provide assistance to the Iraqi government to maintain the dam's structure.
