    . The city of Chania is one of the oldest Greek cities, as the city was built on the site of the ancient settlement of Kydonia, which is considered one of the most important cities on the island of Crete according to Homer.



    During post-Mycenaean times, the city flourished greatly and remained so until the Roman era, when [url=https://www.alsumaria.tv/Entity/3648374460/%D8%A7%D8%BA%D8%B3%D8%B7%D8%B3 %D9%82%D9%8A%D8%B5%D8%B1/ar/]Augustus Caesar[/url] declared Kydonia an independent city. Many ancient towns and temples were built in the region, such as the Temple of Asclepius in Lysos.

    In the year 823 AD, the city had its first contact with Islam, as the Muslim conquerors coming from Andalusia succeeded in conquering the city and changing its features to Arabic, so much so that its current name was given by the Muslims who called it the Khanate.

    After the Crusades, Chania returned to Byzantine rule for many centuries, but it became an Ottoman province since 1645, after a two-month siege.

    The Ottomans strengthened the city walls and rebuilt them again. During the Ottoman era, the city of Chania was known for its public baths and fountains, its churches were transformed into mosques, and the entire island of Crete was transformed into an eastern city.

    After two centuries of stability of Ottoman rule in the region, armed uprisings in the Greek islands came to threaten the Ottoman presence in Crete. Many armed revolts broke out against the Turks in Chania Governorate, culminating in the Great Uprising in 1821, which failed to achieve its goal of liberating the island of Crete. .

    At that time, Crete came under the rule of the Pasha of Egypt, Muhammad Ali, until 1841, when it returned to Ottoman control over all areas of the island.

    This was the first time in history that anyone had attempted an invasion solely by air.

    The city suffered severe damage from German bombing during the battle, and after that the city became the scene of fierce battles between British and German forces, before it was transformed into a British military barracks after the Germans were expelled from it, and from there a major strategic dimension began for the city, which London inaugurated by establishing a military base in the city.

    After the end of the war, Chania was rebuilt and expanded, especially the port at [url=https://www.alsumaria.tv/Entity/1875669502/%D8%AE%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%AC %D8%B3%D9%88%D8%AF%D8%A7/ar/]Souda Bay[/url]. The city quickly became a prominent tourist destination, as tourism revenues became a major part of the city's economy.

    Selected German paratroopers were annihilated by the unarmed Cretans and the few British, Australian and New Zealand forces defending the island.

    The city of Chania was heavily bombed by the German Air Force, but fortunately the destruction was not complete and many historical monuments were saved.
