    The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, met with the French Minister of Defense, Sebastien Lecornu, in Paris, and they discussed the relations of Iraq, the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdistan Region with France, especially in the military field, where the French Minister “committed and continued his country’s military support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and its readiness to expand joint cooperation.”[/size]

    [size=45]A statement by the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region stated that Nechirvan Barzani expressed “thanks and appreciation for France’s military and security support and assistance to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region,” noting “the influential role and sacrifices of French forces within the framework of the international coalition to eliminate ISIS.”[/size]

    For his part, in addition to expressing “appreciation for the role and sacrifices of the Peshmerga in defeating ISIS and confronting terrorism,” His Excellency the French Minister of Defense stressed “his country’s commitment and continued military support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and its readiness to expand joint cooperation within the framework of the Iraqi-French strategic agreement in the military and security fields.” .[/size]

    [size=45]In the meeting, which was attended by the Chief of Staff of the French Army and a number of senior military commanders, the two sides discussed the latest developments in the crisis situation in the Middle East and stressed “the importance of making efforts to prevent further expansion of the circle of war,” and they agreed on the necessity of Iraq and the countries of the region not becoming part of the tensions. “.[/size]

    Relations between the Kurdistan Region and France are characterized by strong ties. The President of the Kurdistan Region has visited Paris several times over the past 10 years and was received at the Elysee Palace. Two French presidents have also visited Erbil 3 times since 2014.[/size]
    [size=45]On (June 29, 2013), then French President François Hollande received President Masoud Barzani, who was the President of the Kurdistan Region at the time, and they discussed relations between Erbil and Paris.[/size]
    [size=45]At a time when the Iraqi government was imposing a siege on the Kurdistan Region following the independence referendum, Nechirvan Barzani, who was Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government at that time, visited Paris on (December 2, 2017). The visit represented an important step to end that siege.[/size]
    [size=45]Nechirvan Barzani also visited Paris on July 10, 2019, and met at the Elysee Palace with President Emmanuel Macron.[/size]
    [size=45]On (February 15, 2023), Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, visited France and met at the Elysee Palace with President Macron, where they discussed a number of issues of common interest, including relations between Erbil and Paris.[/size]
    [size=45]In September 2014, former French President François Hollande visited Erbil at a time when the Peshmerga forces were waging a war with ISIS. Hollande also visited Erbil on January 2, 2017. On August 29, 2021, President Emmanuel Macron also visited Erbil.[/size]
