    Baghdad today - Baghdad
The US State Department revealed the scenes of Secretary Anthony Blinken's meeting with Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani in the capital, Baghdad, yesterday, Sunday.
The ministry said, through its spokesman Matthew Miller, in a statement published today, Monday (November 6, 2023), and received by “Baghdad Today,” that Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken met with Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani in Baghdad, and the two sides discussed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas and the need to avoid the expansion of the conflict, including in Iraq.
He added, "Secretary Blinken discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza and our continued commitment to coordination with Iraq and our other partners in the region to ensure sustainable and safe access to food, water, medical care, and other assistance necessary to meet humanitarian needs."
The spokesman continued, according to the statement, “The two parties also discussed the need to ensure that the Palestinians are not forced to leave the Gaza Strip forcibly, and Minister Blinken urged the Iraqi Prime Minister to hold accountable those responsible for continuing attacks against American forces in Iraq and to fulfill Iraqi obligations to protect all facilities that host these individuals present.” "There at the invitation of the Iraqi government. Secretary Blinken made it clear that the United States will defend its interests and individuals."
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived yesterday evening, Sunday (November 5, 2023), in the capital, Baghdad, and met upon his arrival with Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani.
Al-Sudani's office published a photo of the meeting in the government palace, without mentioning anything about the details of the discussions that took place, while Blinken said, "I had very good and frank conversations with the Iraqi Prime Minister."
He added in a statement after the meeting, "We do not want any confrontation with Iran, but we will take all measures to protect our forces and citizens."
The US Secretary of State confirmed that Al-Sudani "made important statements condemning the attacks on US forces in Iraq."
Blinken stressed that "the attacks on American military personnel are related to Iraq's sovereignty and against its interests."
On the ground, a security source reported, today, Monday (November 6, 2023), that a drone that attempted to target the Ain al-Assad base in Anbar Governorate was shot down.
The source explained in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "A drone, the second of its kind within hours, attempted to target the Ain al-Asad base, where American forces are located in western Iraq, and it was shot down by the base's defense system."
The source continued, "Another drone was shot down that attempted to target the American Al-Tanf military base on the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border."
Late yesterday evening, Sunday (October 5, 2023), the Ain al-Assad base was attacked by a drone, which was shot down some distance from the base.
Before that, US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, on Sunday (November 5, 2023), and on the eve of ending his surprise visit to the capital, Baghdad, revealed some details of what was discussed during his meeting with Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani.
The Daily Journal newspaper said, according to what was translated by “Baghdad Today,” that “Blinken told reporters that he had obtained guarantees from Sudanese that the American forces and presence in Iraq would be protected,” explaining, “The Prime Minister expressed to me his personal insistence on stopping the strikes by (the armed factions).”
Blinken also stressed his government's position on the ongoing attacks on American bases and forces inside Iraq, stating, "I have made it clear beyond doubt that the attacks carried out by (armed factions) linked to Iran on our forces are completely unacceptable, and we will take all necessary measures to protect our forces."
It is noteworthy that Blinken's unannounced visit to Baghdad came after a visit he made on Saturday to the West Bank, in what foreign media described as an "attempt" by Blinken to contain the consequences of the continued military operations carried out by Israel against the besieged Gaza Strip.
