Dhi Qar / Hussein Al-Amel
Oversight organizations that participated in supervising the local council elections called on the relevant authorities to investigate the leaks and audio clips that reveal deals to buy electoral votes, following the circulation of those leaks on social networking sites.
Following the announcement of the preliminary results of the provincial council elections that took place last Monday, several video clips were spread bearing audio fingerprints of losing candidates calling people who pledged to them to buy voters’ votes in exchange for a deal worth millions of dinars.
The aforementioned clips sparked a wide wave of jokes, ridicule, and comments denouncing the use of cheap means to win voters’ votes, while community organizations concerned with electoral affairs called for an investigation into this electoral scandal and holding the parties and people involved in it accountable, considering that the last electoral cycle was one of the cycles that most revealed manifestations of vote-buying.
The director of the Tammuz Organization office in Dhi Qar Governorate, Razzaq Obaid Dhaher, told Al-Mada that “video clips and audio prints appeared after the closing of the polling stations and the announcement of the initial results,” and he added that “many of them reveal real deals to buy votes, while the other section embodies clips that mock Of the losing candidates who became victims of electoral fraud deals.”
Zahir confirmed, “We verified many of the audio fingerprints and they appeared to be real and with the votes of well-known candidates, while other similar clips appeared mocking what happened.”
Zahir pointed out that “the audio clips carry bitter reproach, rebuke, and blame from the losing candidates to people who received large sums of money from them without getting the votes desired or agreed upon between the two parties.” He added, “What happened and unfolded is unfortunate and is not consistent with the rules and regulations of the electoral process.” Which does not allow buying votes or tempting the voter with personal benefits or promises of government jobs.”
The director of the Tammuz Organization office finds that “the current electoral cycle was the most numerous in terms of candidates, as well as the most in terms of revealing scandals of vote-buying deals,” pointing out the use of shameful methods by some candidates in the vote-buying process, in which the names of some well-known clans were included.
Zahir wondered, “If the candidate resorts to such illegal methods to win the elections, how can he serve the citizens after his victory, assuming the government position, and supervising the organization of the governorate’s budget and approving projects within a development plan?”
The director of the Tammuz Organization office stressed the importance of “the Public Prosecution and the Election Commission moving to investigate the revealed scandals and suspicious deals and holding those involved in them accountable,” considering that this is electoral fraud, a violation of the law and community values, and an insult to the reputation and work of the Election Commission, noting that “some of the candidates involved in these deals are well-known.” They are identified and can be easily reached by the relevant authorities.”
The Dhi Qar Election Commission office revealed that less than 30 percent of voters participated in the voting process for the governorate council elections, thus recording the lowest participation rate compared to previous electoral cycles, while the Tammuz Organization for Participation in Election Monitoring spoke of less than 25 percent and the abstention of more than 75 percent of most of them. Of young voters.
The director of the Dhi Qar Elections Office, Falah Al-Moussawi, reported in (early November 2023) that “the number of candidates for the Dhi Qar Governorate Council elections is 331 candidates, with 87 female candidates and 244 candidates from 12 entities and electoral alliances, and two independent candidates who ran individually,” indicating that “ Candidates are competing to fill 18 seats.”
The number of voters registered in the electoral registry in Dhi Qar Governorate witnessed a significant increase, estimated at approximately 500,000 voters, during the past 13 years, as their numbers during the parliamentary elections that took place in 2010 amounted to more than 969,000 voters, compared to their current numbers of 1,465,000 voters.
