Iraq rejects attempts to target fossil fuels: an important source for meeting humanity's needs

There were conflicting economic positions regarding Iraq’s agreement to gradually phase out fossil fuels, as the Ministry of Oil considered oil “fossil fuel” an important source for meeting humanity’s needs.
Specialists say that Iraq is among the countries that rely excessively on oil production for its resources, as oil constitutes more than 95% of the state’s resources and more than 60% of the country’s gross domestic product.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Oil, Assem Jihad, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), “Iraq supports what was stated in the content of the message of the Secretary-General of OPEC,” indicating “the rejection of any proactive text or formula targeting energy, that is, fossil fuels, and this was what was in the COP 28 conference, which It was held in Dubai recently.”
Jihad stressed, “There is a serious move by the producing countries in OPEC towards reducing emissions and developing programs and plans that reduce risks in this regard, and they are keen to protect their people and the peoples of the Earth from climate pollution and reduce its effects.”
He continued, “The producing countries announced this clearly, and their steps, efforts and tireless work to achieve the goals in this regard, in addition to the initiatives and serious efforts of the members of the organization, which translated this on the ground through emission reduction projects, and also in specialized conferences in this regard.”
Jihad pointed out that “producing countries that are members of the organization or from outside it have expressed their rejection of the policy of undermining fossil fuels and their importance in meeting the needs of global consumption, which will remain the most active commodity for the coming decades in light of alternative energy meeting only a small part of global demand.”
He explained, “In accordance with the Paris Agreement, Iraq, along with member states, has achieved more than its obligations to preserve the environment and reduce the percentage of carbon and other pollutants, in addition to proposing a carbon bond project, which is one of the pioneering projects in the region, to reduce emissions, which strengthens its obligations in this regard.” the frame".
He also stressed, “The countries of the world cooperate to reduce emissions in order to preserve the environment and climate, and reject attempts to target fossil fuels and violate the rights of producing countries and their people.”
A spokesman for the Ministry of Oil pointed out that “fossil fuels are an important resource that meets important needs of humanity, and alternative fuels will only compensate for them to a small extent.”
He stated, “Oil-producing countries are oil producers, not emissions producers,” noting that “industrialized countries bear part of this responsibility, and all parties must bear their responsibilities.”
For his part, economic affairs researcher Nabil Jabbar Al-Tamimi said in an interview with Al-Mada: “Countries that base their resources on fossil fuels, such as oil-producing countries, natural gas-producing countries, and coal-producing countries, stand in front of a major economic challenge if fossil fuels are dispensed with in the future.” A broad international attempt to reduce the levels of carbon oxides that threaten the environment and cause climate change.”
He added, “Iraq is among those countries that rely excessively on oil production for their resources, as oil constitutes more than 95% of the state’s resources and more than 60% of the country’s gross domestic product, while the remaining percentage of the output may be affected.” The total if we assume the end of the oil shortage.”
Al-Tamimi pointed out that “Iraq is trying to be politically consistent with the international consensus when it agrees to get rid of fossil fuels according to a policy through which Iraq is trying to highlight its international commitment, but without considering the consequences of those commitments and their damage that may threaten its future, its entity, and its economy, and without the existence of internal plans that match the size of Its international obligations to undertake economic diversification and find economic alternatives that may eliminate the risks of bankruptcy or economic collapse in the event of dispensing with or reducing the use of fuel.”
The economic researcher continued, “We must not forget that Iraq has also placed itself within critical financial limits as a result of its broad operational financial spending policies, as Iraq may be greatly affected if oil prices fall within the limits of $50 per barrel or if Iraqi oil production is reduced, as “Iraq is leaning today in its operating spending on oil imports.”
Iraq had previously confirmed its refusal to include the issue of abandoning fossil fuels in the final agreement of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP28) held in Dubai.
Iraq considered the gradual reduction and elimination of fossil fuels and the gradual cancellation of fossil fuel subsidies inconsistent with the principles of the Paris Agreement.
