The Ministry of the Interior revealed that it had dealt with 2,700 environmental violations during the current year 2023, at a time when specialists called for the legislation of a renewable energy law and work with clean energy, like other countries of the world, for the purpose of preserving the environment from pollution.
This came during an educational and awareness-raising symposium organized by the Media and Communications Commission at the College of Information, University of Baghdad, to introduce the dangers of emissions and the importance of transitioning to clean energy and taking the necessary measures to confront climate change.
Member of the Board of Commissioners of the Media and Communications Authority, Abdul Azim Saleh, confirmed on the sidelines of the symposium in a statement to “Al-Sabah” that the authority has taken a package of measures to reduce emissions and the risks resulting from them, most notably converting the operation of 16 percent of the telecommunications towers spread throughout the various governorates of the country, to clean energy, warning. He pointed out that the next steps will witness a gradual transition to a greater proportion of clean energy to preserve the atmosphere from radioactive and carbon pollution, stressing at the same time the importance of accelerating the legislation of the Clean and Renewable Energy Law to preserve the environment, by relying on solar panels that reduce costs, effort, and pollution rates.
Al-Saleh pointed out that the Authority provided various advertisements in various visual, audio and print media, with the aim of educating and preserving the environment, by reducing water consumption and rationalizing electrical energy.
For her part, a member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, Nofat al-Moussawi, called for legislating the Renewable Energy Law to mobilize efforts and move from the stage of plans and strategies to actual implementation, through responsibility and participatory awareness to preserve the environment, and create a comprehensive process to stimulate innovation for sustainable changes to obtain the degree of zero emissions.
In turn, the Director of the Environmental Police on the Karkh side, Lieutenant Colonel Physicist Mustafa Abdel Hassan, confirmed to “Al-Sabah” that his directorate dealt with 2,700 various environmental violations related to air, water, soil, and animals during the current year, by receiving complaints via the Civil Defense Directorate’s designated phone number (115).
In addition, a member of the National Initiative for Energy Support and Emissions Reduction team in the Iraqi Media Network, Tariq Abdel-Amir, explained to “Al-Sabah” that the network’s institutions have allocated media space through their visual, audio and print means for the file of preserving the environment and combating pollution, in addition to hosting a number of team members and creating a specialized page. Educational and awareness-raising to inform citizens about how to confront climate change.
