Today, Monday (January 22, 2024), the Tehran Chamber of Commerce expressed its regret at the Erbil Chamber of Commerce’s request to boycott Iranian goods, against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s attack on the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
Last week, the Erbil Chamber of Commerce and Industry called for a boycott of Iranian products, and urged all merchants and residents of the Kurdistan region to stop importing and consuming Iranian goods in protest against the missile attacks launched by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on the city.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said that it targeted the “espionage” headquarters of the Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad), but Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, described this claim as “unfounded” and confirmed that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard targeted civilians. In this attack.
Referring to the trade volume of approximately $3 billion annually, the Tehran Chamber of Commerce called on the businessmen of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, “not to forget the long-term suffering to achieve today’s heritage, and to think about developing bilateral cooperation by understanding the ties of the present with an open chest.”
The Tehran Chamber of Commerce statement said that the "bad guys" want to close these items, and representatives of the Iranian private sector stressed the need to continue economic cooperation between the two sides, and called on the chambers of commerce in the two countries to take steps towards developing bilateral relations.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard's attack on Erbil, which was condemned by the world, also faced opposition from the fact-finding committee in the Iraqi parliament.
Abbas Al-Zamili, head of the investigation committee into the Erbil attack, announced in a press conference that the Speaker of Parliament formed a security and defense committee, and the foreign relations committees also examined the details of the attack, and committee members visited the places that were targeted by more than one ballistic missile.
Al-Zamili said that this attack “targeted the sovereignty of Iraq” and that the federal government of this country or the Kurdistan Regional Government should be responsible for any issue related to the country’s security or hostile movements against other countries.
Iran once again defended this attack and described it as an effort to preserve the security of this country.
On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani described Iranian-Iraqi relations as “strong” and said that the two countries have “comprehensive cooperation in various fields of common interest.”
However, on January 17, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani described the operation as a “clear hostile act” against the country and said: “This attack is a dangerous development that weakens the strong relations between Iraq and Iran.”
The Security Council of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq announced the number of dead and six wounded in the attack.
Thousands of residents of the Kurdistan Region took to the streets of Zakho in Dohuk Governorate on January 21 to oppose the actions of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
