    While the parties concerned with the issue of the American presence in Iraq are preoccupied with the duality of the departure or non-departure of American forces from Iraq based on the recent development regarding the formation of the joint “Iraqi-American” Supreme Security Committee, side concerns arise regardless of the results the committee will lead to.
    The concerns vary between security concerns that may appear and increase during the period of the work of this committee, whose tasks are dominated by something essential, which is assessing the extent of the danger of the ISIS terrorist organization and the extent of the capabilities and readiness of the Iraqi forces to confront a similar threat, or economic concerns that may appear after the end of the work of this committee if it reaches a conclusion. The need for American forces to leave.
    Security expert Mukhled Hazem warned today, Monday (January 29, 2024), of a repeat of the events of 2014 in Iraq if American forces are removed from the country, stressing that “removing American forces from Iraq is an external desire, not an internal Iraqi one.”
    The events of 2014 were the emergence of the ISIS terrorist organization only two years after the agreement to withdraw US forces from Iraq in 2012.
    Hazem told “Baghdad Today” that “the dialogues taking place between Iraq and the United States of America contain two types of narratives, the narrative of the American side, which confirms that Washington is negotiating with Baghdad for a bilateral security partnership, and this means that the Americans will remain in Iraq.” Within a new description, and this description is long-term.”
    He stated, “The second narrative is the narrative of the Iraqi side, which promotes that these dialogues aim for a comprehensive withdrawal of American forces from Iraq, and this, according to all expectations and data, is very far from the truth, especially since the American side considers Iraq its strategic dimension and considers protecting its interests and protecting energy security.” And protecting allies, and this is what is agreed upon globally within areas of influence.”
    He added, "The Iraqi government went in this direction to give some kind of reassurance to some parties of the coordination framework and armed factions, who do not want the presence of American forces. This is certainly not an internal desire, but rather an external desire. This external party considers the American presence to be obstructing their projects inside Iraq."
    The security expert continued, “The Iraqi-American Military Committee adopted three axes, the most prominent of which is whether Iraq is safe and not exposed to the threat of ISIS, and we do not know who will determine this matter, especially in light of reports and information about a danger that still threatens Iraq and Syria due to ISIS cells.” The dormant ISIS, and we believe that this matter will take place during a tug of war with the international approval for the withdrawal of the international coalition, and in the coming days we may object to terrorist attacks by ISIS, and this may confuse the situation and negotiations between Baghdad and Washington.”
    He stressed that "the readiness of the Iraqi forces is only ground readiness, and Iraq still needs readiness in its air force, air defense, and naval force, to preserve the country's sovereignty, security, and stability. We expect that there will be long periods of time for dialogue and negotiation between Iraq and the United States of America, and after the end of these dialogues." There will be a report, and this report will be submitted to the United Nations, and after the final decision will be taken regarding the presence of the international coalition forces.”
    Hazem concluded by saying, “The departure of American forces from Iraq at this critical time may repeat the events of 2014, but the collapse may not be a security one, but rather an economic collapse, as well as the impact on the work of many international companies, and here Iraq may go through a very difficult stage if the forces leave.” America is obliged, anything will be possible.”
