Shafaq News/ An informed political source reported on Tuesday that the meeting of the Basra Governorate Council with its new elected formation has been postponed.
The source told Shafaq News Agency: “The session of the Basra Provincial Council has been postponed until next Saturday, after it was scheduled to be held today.”
He added, "The reason for the postponement is to reach understandings between the Tasmeem bloc headed by Asaad Al-Eidani and the coordination framework regarding the position of the governor and his deputies and the head of the council and his deputies."
Yesterday evening, Monday, the leadership of the comprehensive coordination framework of Shiite political forces held a meeting to discuss the formation of local governments.
The leader in the framework, MP Amer Al-Fayez, told Shafaq News Agency, “There is no agreement within the coordination framework to divide the governorates between his blocs and political forces,” explaining that “the news that talks about this is incorrect.”
Media outlets close to the coordination framework reported that the forces of the coordination framework agreed that the We Build Alliance would take over 4 governorates, the State of Law three governorates, and the Wisdom Movement two governorates.
While the leader of the framework, Ali Al-Fatlawi, told Shafaq News Agency, that the reports that spoke about the existence of an agreement between the forces of the coordination framework to distribute local governments according to a specific division are incorrect, and these leaks are intended to test the pulse only.
He stated that this issue will be resolved during the current week with the determination of the names of candidates for positions in local governments.
On January 22, the Supreme Judicial Council directed the heads of the courts of appeal to receive the winners of the local elections to take the legal oath.
On January 21, the Independent High Electoral Commission announced its approval of the results of the provincial council elections, which Iraq witnessed on December 18, 2023.
