    An informed source revealed, today, Thursday (February 29, 2024), that Erbil has entered the line of “ending drug smuggling” with Diyala Governorate, which is a transit corridor for smuggled medicines towards Baghdad and the rest of the southern governorates, while indicating an increase in the number of detainees of important names in this field.     He added, "A hotline was established between Baqubah and Erbil in order to exchange information and coordinate, especially since the region realized the danger of black or unknown source medicines and other counterfeit ones being transported secretly to other governorates," pointing out that "coordination made it possible to thwart the entry of many shipments while tightening procedures." on it in the region.
    He pointed out that "the flow of medicine shipments through Diyala's roads decreased by 90%, according to monthly reports, but it has not ended, especially with the change in smuggling mechanisms, because we are talking about a trade that generates hundreds of millions per month."
    Until last November, the number of heads lost in this trade amounted to 5 important names.
    While Iraq imports more than $3 billion worth of medicines annually, according to Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, Iraq depends on medicines, 90% of which are imported from abroad, and only 10% are manufactured inside Iraq.
    However, the bulk of imported medicines, up to 80%, enter through smuggling and are all unexamined, while only 20% are subject to examination and enter through official ports, according to specialists.
    On the other hand, the Ministry of Health recently, specifically last June, launched the national medicine system, which means that all medicines, even those entering through smuggling or from many ports, must be subject to examination at the Ministry of Health and their prices determined. However, if any medicines are seized that do not contain these Posters that support these medications being subject to testing and pricing in any pharmacy will be confiscated.
