The Syndicate of Agricultural Engineers in Najaf Al-Ashraf demanded a share of contract appointments allocated to the governorate.
The head of the union’s branch in Najaf, Ali al-Nafakh, told “Al-Sabah”: Allocating a share of contracts to agricultural engineers is one of the union’s demands to provide job opportunities for this segment, and there are other demands, including activating the modern villages project that has been lagging behind for more than 10 years and providing the ingredients for success for the full-time law. Agricultural.
He added that the union has addressed several departments to raise its need for agricultural engineers, including agriculture, the municipality, and the municipalities. Agriculture has submitted a letter about its need for 250 agricultural engineers, and the union is still awaiting the response of other departments.
He explained that initially the contracts did not specify quotas and the focus was on educators and administrators, so the union moved to find out the extent of the government departments associated with the governorate’s need for agricultural engineers, pointing out that there are about a thousand agricultural engineers registered in the union and they are waiting for a job opportunity.
With regard to modern villages, Al-Nafakh indicated that there are two villages in Najaf, but their implementation has been lagging so far, while there are lands allocated to the agricultural full-time law in the Najaf desert, but they face two problems, the first is the long distance and the second is the small area of land for each beneficiary within this law, which is Only 50 dunums, and this is not enough to use modern irrigation methods with pivot sprinklers that require an area of 100 dunums or more. Also, the prevailing trend in desert lands for growing strategic crops requires large areas, so this problem led to the reluctance of agricultural engineers to apply to benefit from this law. .
He continued that the union offered a solution to the problem of space, as it is specified by the agricultural full-time law, and in the event of any change we need to amend the law in Parliament, so the proposed solution was to annex additional land with an area of 50 dunams within Law 35, so that the beneficiary can use modern irrigation technologies in the process. Watering.
Al-Nafakh warned that neglecting the problem of agricultural engineers and not providing them with job opportunities will have dire consequences in the future because Iraq suffers from water scarcity and the effects of climate change. Therefore, it needs to develop old agricultural methods and replace them with modern technology to reclaim its vast desert lands extending in the Najaf governorates. Samawah and Ramadi, and this process needs the support of specialized agricultural engineers.
He pointed out that there has been a great reluctance to apply to colleges of agriculture in recent years, until the number of students in each department has reached four or five students due to the lack of job opportunities for their graduates. If things continue like this, the colleges of agriculture are threatened with closure in the future, stressing that there will be There is a central government approach to address this problem by cultivating desert lands and supporting graduates of agricultural colleges to provide specialists in this field.
