    Information / Baghdad..
The head of the Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq, Fadel Al-Gharawi, revealed today, Sunday, the presence of 500,000 beggars in Iraq, some of whom are foreigners.
He said in a statement received by “Al-Ma’louma”: “Foreign begging in Iraq is supported by organized crime gangs, and it is the most dangerous form of human trafficking and is considered an economic trade for them.”
He added, "Organized crime gangs bring foreign beggars into Iraq under several headings, including employment, tourist and religious visits, and concealment as refugees."
He stated that most of the nationalities of foreign and Arab beggars who practice the profession of begging in Iraq are from Asian countries, led by Bangladesh, while Syria ranks first among Arab beggars.
He explained, "The Ministry of Interior deported more than 10,000 foreign beggars in the years 2023 and 2024 and returned them to their countries, while thousands of them are still continuing this profession."
He confirmed that the number of foreigners and Iraqis beggars in Iraq reaches more than 500,000 beggars, most of whom are juveniles and women.
He called on "the Prime Minister to launch a campaign to expel all foreign beggars from Iraq, prosecute crime gangs, consider the year 2025 a year free of begging in Iraq, and stress the parliament and government to amend the penal code and tighten it against those who commit the begging trade." End 25
