Norway arrested the Iraqi refugee in Sweden, Silwan Mumika, who sparked a wave of anger last year after desecrating the Qur’an, and decided to deport him to Sweden “as soon as possible,” according to a judicial decision.
Norwegian police arrested Mumika on March 28, an Iraqi who burned the Qur’an several times in the summer of 2023 in Sweden. Mumika sought refuge in Norway at the end of last month after his Swedish residence permit was cancelled.
Norway intends to deport him “as soon as possible” to Sweden under the Dublin Refugee Convention, according to an Oslo court decision.
The court said, “The deportation will take place as soon as official and practical arrangements are made.”
The desecration of the Qur’an sparked protests and condemnations in many Islamic countries.
In Iraq, protesters attacked the Swedish embassy in Baghdad twice in July, setting the compound on fire on the second attempt.
The Swedish government condemned the desecration of the Qur’an, but stressed the importance of laws related to freedom of assembly and expression on its territory.
In October, the Swedish Migration Agency revoked Mumika's residence permit, saying he had provided her with false information when submitting her asylum application. He was granted a temporary permit as he could not be returned to Iraq.
A month earlier, Iraq requested his extradition for desecrating the Qur’an.
On the eve of his departure for Norway, Sloan Mumika said, “Sweden has become a threat to me since the decision to expel me and the threat to extradite me,” describing freedom of expression and the protection of human rights in the Scandinavian country as a “big lie.”
