The Chinese Ambassador to Baghdad, Cui Wei, confirmed on Sunday his country’s cooperation with Iraq in the “Belt and Road Initiative and the Development Road Project.”
In 2015, China launched an initiative known as the “Belt and Road Strategy” that includes about a thousand projects, including linking Eurasian countries with about seventy countries overlooking this line, most notably the Middle Eastern countries through which the road passes through a network of land and railway roads and airlines, as well as Pipes and Internet networks, which creates the necessary conditions for economic development.
With Iraq starting to establish Al-Faw Port, which will be the link between East Asia and Europe, countries began moving towards establishing a railway connection with Iraq, turning Iraq into a corridor for goods, which shortens the time period for transporting goods, which raised the fear of some economic specialists about these claims because of the impact this would have on Al-Faw port.
On the other hand, Turkey, Iraq, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates recently launched a new trade route linking the Gulf to Europe as part of an effort to strengthen economic relations.

This road is called the Development Road, and it is the newest economic corridor in the region after the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative and the economic corridor between India, the Middle East and Europe.
The project, which was completed during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Baghdad on April 22, is expected to cost $20 billion, with most of the financial support coming from Doha and Abu Dhabi.
In this regard, Chinese Ambassador Cui Wei said, “The Belt and Road Initiative is not limited to building a number of realistic roads only, but rather it is a cooperation initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013 and revolves around policy coordination, facility connectivity, business communication, money circulation, and peoples’ rapprochement.”
The ambassador continued, “A decade after the initiative was launched, the public benefit has become of high quality,” adding that “the international cooperation platform was launched by China and participated in its construction by all parties and is shared by the world. To date, more than three-quarters of the world’s countries and important international organizations have joined the circle.” Friends to cooperate in building the Belt and Road and steadily enhance international consensus, as the scope of countries along the Belt and Road has been expanded to the continent of Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America.”
He continued, "In 2015, China and Iraq signed a cooperation document in building the Belt and Road, as Iraq became a country located along the Belt and Road and an important partner in its construction, and the two countries conducted fruitful cooperation in the field of energy, electricity, infrastructure, communications, and other fields."
The Chinese ambassador stressed his country's keenness to continue strengthening high cooperation in building the Belt and Road with all parties, including Iraq, and to commit to the principle of consultation, cooperation and benefit for all, and to work hand in hand to enhance interconnection and communication on all dimensions, enhance comprehensive multi-level exchanges and cooperation, and pump more energy into global peace and development. “.
He pointed out that “the development road is an important strategic project launched by the Iraqi government and supported by the Chinese side, and it works to improve infrastructure and promote economic development.”
He explained that “the Belt and Road Initiative and the Development Road Project are similar concepts, and the Chinese side is keen to enhance the compatibility between the two projects within the framework of high-quality cooperation.”
He stressed that “Beijing is pushing the Chinese-Iraqi strategic partnership to achieve new progress,” stressing that “the Chinese side supports Chinese companies to discuss with the Iraqi side about ways of cooperation. Chinese companies also pay attention to following up on cooperation projects and detailed cooperation patterns, and are keen to consult with the Iraqi side.” The Iraqi government is committed to linking the path to development.
