Experts: Electricity needs mobile power generation stations and rehabilitation of the distribution network

There is a consensus that the energy sector in Iraq needs to organize its joints based on well-studied plans that diagnose the defect and work to address it, as this sector requires rapid solutions that address the shortage in energy supply and that work should begin by providing mobile stations that reduce loads in cities and towns during peak times, and work to develop the distribution network after it has become outdated and exceeded its useful life.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated the Iraqi-Turkish electricity connection line with a capacity of 300 megawatts via the West Mosul station to supply the northern region, after a 20-year stalemate.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa, said: “The Iraqi-Turkish project links the Jazra station inside Turkish territory to the Kask transformer station in Nineveh Governorate through transmission lines that are 115 kilometers long.”
According to Musa, this connection achieves the benefit of energy exchange, and the talk is about 300 megawatts that Iraq can import through this connection during peak times, and an agreement was made with the Turkish side to return during off-peak times to pay the quantities of energy that the Turkish side needs to achieve the benefit of energy exchange.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity pointed out that "the connection will achieve the connection of the Iraqi network to the European network via the Turkish side, and will not cost Iraq any money in exchange for not importing energy, as Iraq imports energy according to its need for it during peak times."
He explained that "Turkey is linked to European transport networks, and through the Iraqi-Turkish connection, it will allow Iraq to connect with Europe and there will be an exchange of benefits through the country's location. If energy is available in some of the exporting countries to which Iraq is linked, such as the Gulf and the Arab world, the Iraqi network can be exploited and play an important role as a corridor for energy to Europe and vice versa to the Arab world via Iraq."
On the other hand, energy specialist Haider Al-Bayya believes that the electricity sector in Iraq needs to address chronic problems in an immediate manner and according to well-studied plans, as specialized teams in the electricity industry have indicated the existence of large losses in the production of electrical energy, due to the deterioration of the energy distribution network, which has become a major cause of wasting large quantities of production.
He stressed the need for plans to develop the reality of electrical energy transmission in stages to include all areas suffering from the obsolescence of the distribution network and the decline in its performance, noting that the primitive methods of repairing many of the network’s joints represent a major reason for wasting energy that is transmitted from the various production stations to the final consumer.
Al-Bayea pointed out the possibility of addressing the pressure of loads suffered by the regions by directing the installation of mobile production stations that directly supply cities or regions. This is one of the temporary solutions that is approved globally and we can adopt it in the country until the electricity sector in Iraq is revived.
He pointed out that there are specialized international companies that provide such quality stations with appropriate fuel, and work to secure electricity to all regions in Iraq.
He stressed that the effort exerted in the electricity sector is great, but the volume of need is increasing. At the same time, the country faces a shortage in energy production during peak times, which requires that we employ the capabilities that the country possesses in the direction that creates stability in electricity.
Member of the Board of Directors of the Baghdad Economic Forum, Hadi Handas, pointed out that the electricity sector represents the backbone of economic life in the country, and this requires starting to create an integrated electric power sector that guarantees the availability of service throughout the year without exception. Here, we must start developing performance in this sector in a phased manner and with international specifications.
He pointed out that regulating this sector is an absolute necessity and that there must be a collection from all beneficiaries of the energy sector and that these funds must be used to develop the joints of this sector, noting that the majority in the country receive electricity for free.

He stressed the importance of performance being qualitative and in accordance with international specifications, especially with the presence of specialized companies regionally and globally that can be a tributary to the energy sector with its most important requirements and move it to a better stage. It is possible to communicate with this regional and local effort to address all the problems of the electricity sector in Iraq.
Hindas pointed out that the economic feasibility of developing the electricity sector is great, and will move the country to a better stage at all levels, as it will be an incentive to develop the production and service sectors, and thus this integration will be a first step on the path to sustainable development that Iraq seeks.
