    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Energy expert Raad Al-Masoudi revealed, today, Tuesday (August 20, 2024), the reasons for the continued pumping of Iranian gas to Iraq as its internal crisis worsens.
Al-Masoudi told Baghdad Today, "Iran has very large reserves of natural gas in several fields, but the pressing American sanctions for decades have delayed the wheel of development and investments and have led to a very high reduction in its production capabilities during the past decades."
He added, "Tehran's export of gas to Iraq does not mean that it is self-sufficient, but rather suffers from a production deficit that is strikingly apparent at the height of winter due to the growth of its use domestically."
He continued: "Tehran's continued pumping of gas to Iraq is basically a decision from the highest echelon of Iranian decision-making (referring to the Supreme Leader) for multi-faceted political dimensions, in addition to the fact that it provides liquidity for hard currency, although it does not come easily and is always delayed due to American obstacles that sometimes continue for very long months."
He pointed out that "Tehran is trying to get closer to the China-Russia axis in order to open up and attract more investments and the possibility of extending a pipeline to supply gas from Moscow towards the Arabian Gulf, which could meet Iran's gas needs and transfer the surplus to Iraq and other countries, while achieving a mutual economic benefit from the price difference."
It is noteworthy that the Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, announced on Friday, May 10, 2024, that tomorrow, Saturday, will witness the submission of international companies to the fifth supplementary round of licensing rounds and the sixth round .
The gas expected to be obtained from these two rounds is equivalent to 200% of the amount of gas that Iraq imports from Iran, which amounts to 1,700 cubic meters per day .
A statement by the media office of the Minister of Oil, received by "Baghdad Today", quoted Abdul Ghani as saying, "We in the Ministry of Oil have taken a decision since the first day we took over the management of the ministry to go to develop the oil fields and exploration areas with different gas and oil promise, so the fifth licensing round that was frozen was activated and contracts were signed with the companies and activated ."
He added, "The quantities of gas expected to be produced from this round will be about 800 million standard cubic feet per day, as Iraq is in dire need of these quantities. In addition, we launched the fifth supplementary licensing round and the sixth licensing round ."
The Minister of Oil said, "These two rounds target 30 oil fields and exploration areas with promising gas and oil potential. The exploration areas expected to be worked on will be in the western borders of Iraq, starting from the provinces of Nineveh, Anbar, Najaf, Karbala and Diwaniyah. Tomorrow will be the date for presenting the opportunities to 22 companies that have expressed their desire to obtain these opportunities, including large and international companies known for their ability to invest in the field of oil and gas ."
Abdul Ghani revealed that "Iraq will obtain more than 3,459 million standard cubic feet of gas per day through these two rounds. In addition, the Ministry of Oil has activated integrated projects and signed two memoranda of understanding, one of which is with a Russian company to invest in the Nasiriyah field with a capacity of more than 300,000 barrels per day. These integrated projects include oil production, gas investment to operate power stations, and the establishment of a refinery that is commensurate with the volume of oil production, in addition to the establishment of a petrochemical plant in the same field ."
He said, "There is another project, the integrated South Basra project, which invests in the Tuba oil field with a production capacity of 200,000 barrels per day. The project includes oil production, gas investment, and the establishment of a power station, in addition to the establishment of a refinery and a petrochemical complex in the same field. We have worked on implementing two of them, and the coming period will witness the implementation of other integrated projects."
