    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Member of Parliament Osama Al-Badri, today, Friday (September 6, 2024), identified the positives of the Minority Rights Law in Iraq, stressing the existence of parliamentary support for its passage.
Al-Badri said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Iraq is a diverse country that includes multiple spectrums, including minorities that give strength to society. For this reason, we have a movement with representatives to proceed with the legislation of the law on the rights of minorities in the country."
He added that "the law, which includes several articles, has many positive aspects, most notably supporting minorities to remain in their areas and ensuring their rights according to legal paths, in addition to registering them," noting that "there is parliamentary support for presenting the law in a first reading and then conducting extensive discussions that contribute to its maturation until reaching a second reading and voting on it."
Al-Badri pointed out that "the parliamentary movement to support the law of minorities in Iraq is important in order to support their rights. It is the first law to be enacted in the country and also includes the call for the return of immigrants to the country."
Minorities constitute more than 10% of the population of Iraq, and although the constitution guarantees the protection of all components and grants them equal rights, the policies of the parties have enshrined the concepts of quotas and sectarianism instead of legal and rights considerations. In the absence of serious moves to restore their rights, the major parties ignore minorities on the grounds that their voice does not represent a difficult number in the political process, according to observers.
