Baghdad/Al-Masala: Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed that his country currently has 3 partnerships with Iraq in the field of energy, noting that it is beneficial for Iraq to have the opportunity to diversify the methods of transporting oil to global markets via the Turkish port of Ceyhan.
Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said that his country has “great potential for cooperation” with Iraq in the energy sector, according to Anadolu Agency.
He noted that there are “currently 3 partnerships with Iraq in the energy sector that aim to make Turkey more efficient and active in the field of oil and natural gas.”
The Turkish minister added that his country could play a greater role in oil trade and transportation, as well as play an “important role” in transforming the development road project into an energy road as well.
The “Development Road” project is a land and railway road extending from Iraq to Turkey and its ports, with a length of 1,200 kilometers inside Iraq, and aims to transport goods between Europe and the Gulf countries.
Bayraktar said, “It is beneficial for Iraq to have an alternative and an opportunity to diversify the methods of transporting oil to global markets via the Turkish port of Ceyhan to the Mediterranean Sea, in addition to the port of Basra.”
He added, "There are no technical obstacles to this, nor any commercial obstacles, and therefore serious political will must be demonstrated."
Oil exports from the Kurdistan Region via the Iraq-Turkey pipeline have been halted since March 2023 when a Paris-based international court ruled in Baghdad’s favor that Ankara had violated a 1973 agreement by allowing Erbil to begin independent oil exports in 2014.
Before the suspension of the operation, Erbil was exporting about 400,000 barrels per day via the pipeline, in addition to about 75,000 barrels of Kirkuk oil.
Despite several rounds of talks between officials from the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Federal Government and Turkey, exports have yet to resume and several international oil companies have suspended production.
