Allawi warns political blocs: Passing the Personal Status Law proposal will tear Iraq apart and
turn it into sects and denominations. The head of the National Coalition, Ayad Allawi, warned political blocs against passing the Personal Status Law proposal in parliament, stressing that voting on it will turn Iraq into sects and denominations.
Allawi's office said in a statement received by "Mawazine News" that "the leader of the National Coalition sent a message to the heads of political blocs, warning of the repercussions of amending the Personal Status Law if it is approved by the Iraqi Council of Representatives."
The statement added that "Allawi stressed in his message the escalation in Iraq and what raises concerns, as amending the above law, which is scheduled to be approved in the upcoming parliament sessions, threatens the real gains that guarantee the unity of the Iraqi fabric with all its components."
According to the statement, Allawi stressed that "standing against passing the Personal Status Law amendment project and rejecting it is preventing a disaster that would tear and fragment Iraq into sects and denominations, and thus perpetuate division and expand the circle of division and societal disintegration."
He explained that "this measure that some forces in the House of Representatives are trying to take affects the rights guaranteed by the Constitution."
