    Baghdad Today - Kurdistan
Editor-in-Chief of the Kurdistan Democratic Party's Al-Taakhi newspaper, Jawad Malekshahi, confirmed today, Thursday (November 7, 2024), that the formation of the Kurdistan government is going through difficult labor, due to the conflicts between the forces that won the elections, while he explained the extent of the influence of the new American administration on this file.
"The formation of the government in the region is not affected by the formation of the new American administration, as there are timelines that must be adhered to, the most important of which is after the appeals issue is resolved by the assigned judicial body and announced. The government must be formed within a maximum period of one month. Therefore, the Kurdistan Democratic Party formed its negotiating delegation headed by Hoshyar Zebari early, to begin dialogues with the other winning parties," Malekshahi said in an interview with Baghdad Today.
He added, "These (winning) forces must quickly decide whether to participate in the government or not, and some of them announced that they will remain in the opposition and monitor the performance of the new government."
The writer and journalist concluded his statement by pointing out that “it is true that the change of administration in Washington will affect the overall international situation, especially in the Middle East, but it will not constitute an obstacle to the formation of the regional government, because Kurdistan’s relations with the United States are not linked to who leads it, as the latter is a state of institutions and its strategic policies do not change with the change of the personality of the new president.”
    Regional power struggle
However, political researcher Ali Ibrahim believes that regional countries are expected to have a significant impact on the path to forming the next Kurdistan government for many reasons.
Ibrahim told Baghdad Today that “the reasons for these countries’ influence on the formation of the regional government are related to their national security and economic interests,” adding: “Turkey, for example, seeks to ensure that the government in the region does not pose a threat to its security, especially with regard to Kurdish movements within its borders such as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. Therefore, it prefers the Kurdistan Democratic Party to have the greatest influence because it is less in conflict with its policies, while it views the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan with suspicion.”
“Iran shares these concerns with Turkey, as it also seeks to ensure that the Kurdistan government does not support Kurdish movements inside Iran,” he added, adding that “both countries are keen for the new government to guarantee their national security, especially with the Kurdish issue, which they consider a potential threat at any time . ”
“In addition to security concerns, Turkey and Iran are seeking to secure a greater share of the Iraqi market, which is a consumer market and provides many job opportunities in both countries,” the political researcher said, adding that “these two countries may try to influence the formation of the government to ensure that the Kurdistan government does not conflict with their economic interests . ”
He continued, "There is also a higher goal that the two countries agree on, which is to try to destabilize the region to prevent it from becoming a model to be emulated by the Kurds in both Turkey and Iran, and they seek to show that Kurdish rule is unsuccessful, and that linking with the large central state is better for the Kurds."
