Caught on Camera: The Very Awkward Moment That Happened Between Obama and the Prime Minister of Iraq

Being the leader of your country doesn’t insulate you from the odd awkward moment, even with other world leaders.
That’s the lesson Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi learned Monday at the G-7 summit in Germany when he was caught on camera trying to sidle up to President Barack Obama, who apparently had no idea he was there and ignored him completely.

Obama was speaking with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde when Abadi approached with his translator. Obama, appearing deeply engaged in conversation with the other two, didn’t turn around or seem to have any inkling that the prime minister was behind him. After Obama stood, Abadi did the same, taking an exaggerated look at his watch and his translator putting his arms up in a shrug, before walking away.
Obama and Abadi are seeking a path forward in combatting the Islamic State. Obama told reporters at a press conference later Monday, “We don’t yet have a complete strategy” to combat the militant group.
