Columbus Blue Jackets make it 8 straight wins by virtue of 4-1 win over Calgary Flames in NHL action

Markus Nutivaara, left, of the Columbus Blue Jackets finds himself hitting the deck after colliding with Micheal Ferland of the Calgary Flames during NHL action Friday night in Calgary. The Blue Jackets made it eight straight wins by virtue of a 4-1 victory over the Flames.

That six-game winning streak already feels like ancient history.
The Calgary Flames, after all, are skidding again.
    Starting to, anyway.
With Friday’s 4-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Saddledome, the Flames have now suffered consecutive regulation setbacks for the first time in more than a month.
Neither was pretty, or especially close.
“We’ve made improvements in areas,” said Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan. “We need to now make sure we get back our level of desperation to get points every night.”

    Points every night?
Sounds a bit greedy, but that’s exactly what the Blue Jackets (19-5-4) have been up to.
John Tortorella’s troupe arrived in Calgary on a seven-game winning streak and cruised to an eighth straight victory, upping their league-best point percentage to .750. Their last regulation loss was way back on Nov. 23, a 2-0 blanking by Flames goalie Chad Johnson in Ohio.
Forwards Boone Jenner, Brandon Saad, Sam Gagner and Matt Calvert all scored Friday for the out-of-towners, while rookie defenceman Zach Werenski counted a couple of assists for the NHL’s best surprise story of this season.
“Our compete level has to come up,” Gulutzan said. “They were quicker than us. They out-battled us in areas. They executed betted. I thought they were real sharp, and we didn’t match it.
“It’s obvious that they’re not doing it just to us. They’re doing it to a lot of teams to a lot of teams in the National Hockey League, but we should have been prepared to elevate our game and we weren’t.”
Sean Monahan cashed in on a five-on-three power play for the Flames’ lone tally in Friday’s defeat, extending his career-best point spree to nine straight dates.
In Sunday’s road clash with the Arizona Coyotes (7 p.m., Sportsnet Flames/Sportsnet 960 The Fan), Monahan has an opportunity to become only the third NHLer so far this season to reach double digits on an personal points run. Chicago’s Artem Anisimov (11) and Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux (10) are the only current members of that exclusive club.
That’s about the last thing on his mind.
Monahan & Co. cobbled together a seven-game winning streak last December, but it didn’t mean squat. They faded from playoff contention soon after.
After Wednesday’s 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Friday’s lesson from the Blue Jackets, they’re starting to give back some of the valuable ground they worked so hard to gain during their recent six-game roll.
“It’s time to stop it where it is,” said Flames captain Mark Giordano. “The last two games haven’t been near good enough. We’ve been hurting ourselves with some big mistakes.”
“This is a tough league, and we have to be better,” Monahan added. “It’s a long season. When you lose two games in this league, it can sometimes put you in a bad spot, but we’re a strong team here, we have a good room in here and we just have to stick together and play together.”
Jenner scored less than four minutes after Friday’s opening faceoff and the Blue Jackets doubled their lead on a sequence that might leave Monahan wanting to cover his eyes in the next video session.
Calgary’s surging centre coughed up the puck in the neutral zone and then lost a battle along the boards, with Werenski feeding Saad as he entered enemy territory. Top shelf, where Mom hides the Christmas baking.
The Flames briefly trimmed the lead with their ninth power play marker in a seven-game run — Kris Versteeg teed up Monahan for a one-time blast — but that was about the only highlight as the Flames dropped to 16-15-2.
The Blue Jackets opened the middle stanza on the man-advantage and rearguard Deryk Engelland was still serving his two-minute banishment for roughing when Werenski’s wrister was deflected by Gagner — and off Dennis Wideman’s leg — and wound up in the back of Calgary’s net.
Things turned from bad to worse after an ugly gaffe by Johnny Gaudreau on another power play. Perhaps in the spirit of the season, Gaudreau gift-wrapped a giveaway at the offensive blue line, with Calvert capitalizing on a breakaway.
Calgary’s power play has been a positive, but they’ve also surrendered shorties in back-to-back games.
    Both losses.

“We might have been getting away with a few things here and there when you’re on a winning streak, but then you lose a few games and goals go in your net and you notice those more,” Giordano said. “We have to clean it up.”
