     Calgary Flames at Arizona Coyotes

After winning six consecutive games to help resurrect their season, the Calgary Flames have stumbled in their last two outings. The Flames have been outscored 10-4 in consecutive losses to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets and were clearly the second best team on the ice in both outings. Calgary will look to get things back on track tonight as they kick off a quick two game road trip tonight in Arizona (7 pm, Sportsnet Flames and Sportsnet 960).
CALGARY FLAMES 16-15-2, 5TH PACIFIC DIVISION

    Matthew Tkachuk-Mikael Backlund-Michael Frolik
    Johnny Gaudreau-Sam Bennett-Alex Chiasson
    Kris Versteeg-Sean Monahan-Troy Brouwer
    Micheal Ferland-Matt Stajan-Garnet Hathaway

    Mark Giordano-Dougie Hamilton
    TJ Brodie-Dennis Wideman
    Jyrki Jokipakka-Deryk Engelland

For the first time since November 28th, the Flames are turning to Brian Elliott between the pipes tonight in the first half of a back-to-back scenario. Since the middle of November, Calgary has used Chad Johnson as their number one goalie and, prior to tonight, he had made 15 starts in 17 games. While neither of the last two losses can be pinned on Johnson, he also wasn’t as strong in those two starts as he’s been for most of the last month. As for Elliott, he’s looking for another strong performance as he was very strong in his last outing against the Islanders. On the season, Elliott sits 3-9-1 with a 3.31 goals against average and an 0.886 save percentage; he’s looking to snap a personal seven game losing skid.
The Flames will make one lineup change tonight as Hathaway will return to the lineup in place of Lance Bouma. Hathaway has missed the last two games as a healthy scratch but wasn’t sitting due to performance reasons. Instead, with the returns of both Bouma and Versteeg, Hathaway was a victim of a numbers game so he’ll be worked back in. Bouma, on the other hand, has looked good in four games since returning from an injury; he has a goal and an assist in those four games. Freddie Hamilton will sit as the other forward healthy scratch while recently recalled Tyler Wotherspoon is the health scratch on the back end.

The alarming thing about the last two losses for Calgary is how badly outplayed they were for large stretches of the game, specifically at five-on-five. The Flames were emphatically in the red when it comes to possession almost all night against the Lightning and it was even worse through the first 40 minutes two nights later against Columbus. After 40 minutes on Friday, Calgary was at 38.9% possession and had generated just five scoring chances at even strength. As such, it was no surprise to see them trailing 4-1 on the scoreboard. Yes, they were able to generate a few decent chances in the third period, it was basically a moot point as the Blue Jackets seemed very much in control from start to finish. Against a much more pedestrian opponent tonight, the expectation would be to see the Flames dictate far more of the pace.
On the bright side, a few streaks continued on Friday night. Monahan's first period powerplay goal helped extend three streaks, including his own personal and career-best point streak to nine games. With an assist on Calgary's only goal, Gaudreau extended his point streak to seven games dating back to before he sustained his broken finger in November. Finally, the Flames scored a powerplay goal for a seventh straight game, something they haven't done since December of 2005.
ARIZONA COYOTES 11-15-5, 7TH PACIFIC DIVISION

    Lawson Crouse-Martin Hanzal-Radim Vrbata
    Tobias Rieder-Jordan Martinook-Shane Doan
    Jamie McGinn-Peter Holland-Anthony Duclair
    Josh Jooris-Christian Dvorak-Ryan White

    Oliver Ekman-Larsson-Connor Murphy
    Alex Goligoski-Michael Stone
    Jakob Chychrun-Luke Schenn

The last time the Coyotes and Flames met was actually the start of one of the best stretches of hockey this season for the former group. Despite losing 2-1 in overtime on December 8th, Arizona played a solid game and could easily have picked up the two points. By and large, the Coyotes have played some decent hockey since that time, too. Including that night, Arizona is 3-2-1 and have picked up wins over Toronto, Detroit, and Nashville. That said, the Coyotes weren't very happy at all with their 4-1 loss to Minnesota on Saturday and will be looking for a much better effort tonight.
That game against the Flames earlier this month did have some negative consequences, though. Max Domi injured his hand in a fight with Garnet Hathaway and is going to miss the next number of weeks as a result. For a team sitting 30th averaging 2.16 goals per game and 27th at 28.3 shots per game, losing one of their key offensive catalysts in Domi was not something they needed. Arizona is also without Brad Richardson long term as he continues to recover from a broken leg suffered back in November.

This Coyotes team allows a lot of shots, which makes the work of goaltender Mike Smith that much more impressive. Arizona allows a league-worst 35.6 shots per game and, not surprisingly, also allows a lot of goals; they're 28th in that category at 3.10 goals against per game. Taking that into consideration, Smith's numbers look that much more incredible. Making his 18th start tonight, Smith has posted a sparkling 0.930 save percentage while being shelled almost every night; he sits 7-5-4 with a 2.62 goals against average. One certainly wonders how much closer to .500 Arizona might be had Smith not missed a good chunk of time earlier in the season.
