Will Tony Romo Get On The Field with NFC East Clinched?

The Dallas Cowboys clinched both the NFC East title and the number-one seed in the NFC when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New York Giants last night. It’s a victory for the Cowboys without having to play a game as this meme so eloquently explains.

It’s all fun and games, and the outcome of Monday Night Football’s matchup against the Detroit Lions becomes almost irrelevant. It’s impossible for anyone to catch Dallas – who can get to the Super Bowl by winning two Playoff home games. But one little storyline(well, not so little) will likely show its ugly face again with teams generally resting starters with nothing to play for in the final two games.
Jerry Jones has made it his goal in life to make sure Dak Prescott has to answer as many questions about Tony Romo as possible. Before, the debate was “should Dallas get Romo back in there before Prescott blows the 11-1 start?” Now it’s going to become “should they play Romo just to give him some reps in case he does have to play in the Playoffs?”

If you asked me objectively what would be the smarter move to make, I would tell you playing Romo would be wise in order protect Dak Prescott from getting injured and letting Romo knock the rust off.
That might be the smart move for 31 other NFL franchises, but in Dallas, I would say don’t even consider putting Romo in. Unless were talking in final game, in the final quarter, if it’s a blowout, the headlines it would create just wouldn’t be worth it.
Prescott has done a great job of quieting the noise all season. However, this situation is delicate with a potential Super Bowl on the line. Just imagine the following situation happens. Let’s say Dak struggles in the first half against the Lions, which he could since Detroit has a good defense that hasn’t allowed 20 points in a game in six weeks.
So imagine Detroit goes up 17-3, and Romo is sitting out there, dying to play. And Jerry Jones is up in his suite, watching his team lose on Monday Night Football on national television. Imagine Garrett finally decides to put Romo in the game, and Tony goes out there and the offense comes alive. Say the Cowboys come back to win on a late Tony Romo drive, what do you think would happen?
On 31 other teams, nothing would happen. They would think it was good that their backup QB can play if he needs to. They’d think about how the starting QB won twelve games, and that would be the end of it. In Dallas, anything could happen.

A fanbase full of Romo-lovers would come out as strong as ever. Jerry Jones’ little spot in his heart for Tony Romo would start to tingle. And realistically, Romo wouldn’t be a bad option. But on this team, during this season, the Cowboys need to keep Romo’s butt on the bench.
