An unspoken conversation between Trump and Putin during the G20 summit

US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held an unannounced conversation at a dinner for leaders of the G20 summit earlier this month in Germany, a White House official said.
The two leaders met for two hours on July 7 in a formal meeting that Trump said later that Putin denied allegations that he directed efforts to intervene in the US presidential election in 2016.
Trump and Putin met for the first time during the summit during a gathering of leaders and then held a bilateral meeting briefly attended by a number of journalists.
In the evening, the two leaders attended a dinner for the group leaders. Putin was sitting next to First Lady Melanie Trump, the White House official said on Tuesday. The US president left the leaders at the end of the dinner and spent some time talking to Putin. This conversation has not been disclosed before.
"There was no 'second meeting' between President Trump and President Putin ... It was just a brief talk at the end of the dinner," the official said, hinting that the White House had tried to "hide" a second meeting that was wrong, malicious and ridiculous.
"The scandalous story of a secret dinner with Putin is disgusting," Trump said in a tirade late on Tuesday, referring to all G20 leaders and their husbands.
News of the conversation, which Ian Bremer, head of the Eurasia Group for Political Risk Consultancy, was the first to reveal, has raised concerns again as Congress and a special investigator investigate US intelligence allegations of Russia's intervention in the 2016 presidential election to help Trump win. Trump denied any complicity.
Bremer said Trump had risen from his seat at midday and had spent about an hour talking "particularly and enthusiastically" with Putin, "with only Putin's own interpreter."
Bremer added that the absence of an American interpreter surprised other leaders during the dinner, calling it a "violation of the national security protocol."
