The Iranian general, Yahya Rahim Sufi, the military adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, called on the Syrian regime to pay the bill for the survival of its president Bashar al-Assad in power, which cost Iran money.
In a symposium at the Institute for Future Studies in the Islamic World, Safavi reviewed the developments of the Syrian crisis on the ground and politically. He said: "We are serious in defending Syria and its territorial integrity, but the regime must pay the cost bill."
"Syria has oil, gas and phosphate mines, and these natural resources can pay the bill."
Safavi offered to establish long-term agreements between Iran and Syria to ensure compensation for what Iran lost there, pointing out that the Syrian mines began exporting phosphate to Iran effectively.
As for the Russian intervention there, the Iranian general said that the former won a 49-year contract with the Syrian government, and Russia obtained military bases and political and economic privileges.
"Syria's neighbors wanted the regime to fall, including Jordan, Israel, the United States and Saudi Arabia, but our alliance there did not allow the regime to fall, and we expanded our influence in Iraq."
Tabnak criticized the Syrian regime for marginalizing Iran's role in the reconstruction phase. The site demanded long-term agreements covering the costs of Iranian intervention in favor of Assad.
Al-Assad attacked the newspaper "Law" and described him as a "cowboy" because he gave him all the major economic deals for the Russian government instead of Iran.
