The Chinese army has conducted live-fire exercises along the country's southeast coast off Guangzhou between two groups of islands close to China, which Taiwan has controlled since 1949, while Taiwan has denounced the exercises.
"The exercises were a direct response to the provocations of Taiwan leaders associated with moves that Beijing fears may be an official quest for independence," Sky News quoted the news agency Xinhua as saying.
"The Chinese Ministry of Defense has not tracked down the exercises, or whether they are the same maneuvers announced in the Taiwan Strait," she said.
For its part, Taiwan condemned the Chinese maneuvers, saying that "Beijing resorted to cheap verbal intimidation and a blatant review of military power to threaten the island." Ending / 25 z
