Pompeo: US sanctions target 600 people and companies in Iran
announced that US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said the sanctions announced by his country on Iran and entered into force, Monday, targeting 600 people and the company 's financial sector.
"These sanctions will isolate Iran from the oil market," Pompeo said in an interview with Fox News. "At the same time, the Iranian people will not be harmed by that."
He said: "These sanctions are the most severe against the Iranian Republic, and its goal to change the behavior of Iran and the protection of Israel and other countries."
Pompeo said the United States would exclude eight countries from dealing with Iran in the oil field, without specifying.
He explained that those exceptions will be valid for six months, adding that exempted countries can buy Iranian oil, provided that the amount you buy in a security account (ie controlled by a third party).
He pointed out that Iran can spend that return within the scope of specific humanitarian needs.
On Monday, the United States began implementing its second package of economic sanctions on Iran, including energy, finance and shipping.
The sanctions were officially launched at 00:01 Washington time (05:01 GMT).
The United States targets these sanctions, aimed at restricting the international trade activities of Iran's oil company, the country's heavily export-dependent economy.
US sanctions apply to foreign financial institutions that deal with the central bank and other Iranian banks.
