WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington may impose new sanctions on Iran after targeting the oil and financial sectors, White House national security adviser John Bolton said on Friday.
"I think you will see more sanctions over time and stricter enforcement," Bolton said at a brief press conference in Paris, where 70 heads of state are expected to mark the centenary of the end of World War I.
The administration of President Donald Trump, who withdrew in May from the 2015 agreement to prevent Iran from acquiring the atomic bomb, reinstated all sanctions lifted after its implementation.
"The impact of the sanctions has been considerable on Iran. On the economic front, the Iranian currency is at its lowest level, inflation is huge and the country is in a state of stagnation. "
"The goal is still to reduce Iranian oil exports."
The nuclear deal was signed in Vienna on July 14, 2015 between Iran and the five permanent members of the Security Council (the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain) and Germany.
It allowed the end of Tehran's long isolation by lifting a section of international economic sanctions. In return, Iran agreed to limit its program to ensure that it does not seek to acquire nuclear weapons.
On 8 May, Trump announced the withdrawal from the agreement and the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran.
