16 years after its closure .. Open the Green Zone in Baghdad around the clock

After 16 years of closure, the Iraqi authorities on Tuesday opened the Green Zone in Baghdad to citizens around the clock.
Brigadier General Jassim Yahya, commander of the Special Task Force, told reporters that the area, which includes the US Embassy and Iraqi government headquarters, is now open 24 hours a day without any exceptions or conditions.
Ali explained that the authorities removed 12,000 concrete wall from the area.
The 10 square kilometer area, known for palm trees and statues, has been closed to the public since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Earlier this year, the government began easing restrictions in the area, saying the Green Zone would be open to the public during Eid al-Fitr.
The area was home to Saddam Hussein's palaces before the invasion, and became known as the Green Zone following the military campaign that overthrew the former regime.
In later years, the walled area became a symbol of inequality in the country, increasing Iraqis' sense that their government was out of sight.
Only Iraqis with special security badges could enter the area, and various attempts and promises by the Baghdad government to open the Green Zone to traffic over the past years failed because of ongoing security concerns.
Earlier this year, the government began easing restrictions in the region, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said the Green Zone would be fully open to the public at Eid al-Fitr.
