The Pentagon announced on Friday that acting Defense Secretary Mark Esber authorized the sending of US forces and resources to Saudi Arabia amid growing tension in the Gulf region.
The US Defense Department said in a statement that the move provided "an additional deterrent" in the face of "real" threats in the region.
The statement came after media reports talked about Washington's preparations to send 500 troops, aircraft and air defense media to Saudi Arabia soon.
The Associated Press quoted Pentagon sources as saying part of the troops and Patriot missiles had been delivered to Prince Sultan base in the kingdom.
Riyadh yesterday announced its agreement to host US troops "to strengthen security and stability in the region."
