BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has invited a rival political bloc leader to work with him on a parliamentary vote of confidence in Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi as thousands of anti-government protesters rallied for a fifth day in a row.
Sadr, who leads the largest bloc in the Iraqi parliament, in a statement to Hadi al-Amiri, leader of the second largest parliamentary bloc, to help in a vote of no confidence from the prime minister.
Sadr said in a statement: "In response to the words of brother Adel Abdul Mahdi, I thought that the demand for early elections in which preserve your dignity .. If you refuse, I invite brother Hadi al-Amiri to cooperate in order to withdraw confidence from you immediately."
Sadr asked Abdul Mahdi on Monday to announce early elections, but the prime minister replied on Tuesday he could not do so and parliament should decide to do so.
"If the goal of the election is to change the government, there is a shorter path, that is to allow your (Sadr) to agree with brother (Shiite leader Hadi) al-Amiri to form a new government, and then the prime minister can resign," Mahdi said in a statement to Sadr earlier on Tuesday. The new Government shall assume its functions within days, if not hours, of the achievement of this Agreement. ”
Abdul Mahdi came to power a year ago as a compromise to resolve a weeks-long political crisis between Sadr, who leads an alliance of his followers, communists and other parties, and Amiri, who leads an alliance of Shi'ite faction leaders backed by Iran.
Massive protests, driven by discontent over economic hardship and corruption, have broken relative stability for nearly two years in Iraq. The total death toll since the unrest began on October 1 is at least 250.
