School buses delayed over threat

MENOMONIE — A threat called into the Menomonie Police Department caused Menomonie Transportation Co. school buses to be delayed about 45 minutes Monday.
The threat was called in at 3:27 p.m., with the caller saying “he was going to pick a bus at random” at the high school “and blow it up with all the students on it” within 10 minutes, according to Police Chief Eric Atkinson.
School district Superintendent Joe Zydowsky said buses were routed to the nearest school and searched while students were evacuated into the schools. Most students on buses at the time were elementary students. No suspicious devices were found on the buses.
“Our principals did a great job organizing students that may or may not have been from their school,” Zydowsky said.
Parents were alerted to the delay via Twitter, email and an automatic emergency call system. Some parents picked their children up at the schools.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Menomonie Police Department at 715-232-2198.
Dunn County District Attorney Andrea Nodolf said at the school board meeting Monday that one of her children was on one of the buses.
“I realize what an important issue this is,” she said, adding her office will work with the police department to prosecute those responsible, if identified, to the fullest extent of the law.
