North Korea threatens to retaliate if sanctions are tightened

North Korea threatened to respond if the international community decided to tighten sanctions on its nuclear and ballistic programs.
Pyongyang's threat comes after the Financial Times published remarks by US President Donald Trump in which he expressed his willingness to "solve" the North Korean problem alone without China's help.
It also comes against the backdrop of launching military exercises Monday between Seoul, Tokyo and Washington to face the threat of surface-to-surface missiles launched by North Korean submarines.
A spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry said the "irresponsible actions" were pushing the heavily strained peninsula to the brink of war, the official KCNA news agency reported.
He said the United States' quest to deprive North Korea of its "nuclear deterrent" was a "crazy dream."
"The United States is in the opposite direction by calling for a confrontation to eliminate the DPRK, so we have no choice but to take all possible measures to respond," he said, using North Korea's official name.
"The world will soon see the measures we will take to respond to the despicable and irresponsible extortion of sanctions," the spokesman said.
North Korea has often made threats through its media.
Trump is due to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at his headquarters in Maralago, California, and North Korea will be among the topics to be discussed.
North Korea's North Korea will refrain from any act of provocation until the end of the US-China summit, said Yang Mu-ji at the North Korean University of Studies.
"It is more likely that we will celebrate the 85th anniversary of the founding of the army on April 25 with a sixth nuclear test, launch of a satellite or an intercontinental missile test," Yang told AFP.
North Korea is seeking to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching US territory.
Tension on the Korean Peninsula has increased with the communist regime being accused of accelerating its ballistic and nuclear programs and subsequent tightening of international sanctions.
In February, Pyongyang fired four missiles, three of which landed in Japan's territorial waters. Pyongyang said it was an attack on US bases in the archipelago
