Mattis says U.S. will ‘work out’ Turkish concerns over arming Syrian Kurds

VILNIUS,— Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said Wednesday he is confident the United States can allay any concerns Turkey has over the decision to arm Kurdish fighters in Syrian Kurdistan whom Ankara considers terrorists.

“We will work very closely with Turkey in support of their security on their southern border,” Mattis said at a news conference in Lithuania.

“We have very open discussions about options and we will work together, we will work out any of the concerns. I am not concerned at all about the NATO alliance and the relations between our nations.”

The Pentagon on Tuesday said President Donald Trump had approved arming Kurdish fighters ahead of an eventual offensive to recapture the Islamic State group’s Syrian stronghold of Raqa.

Turkey on Wednesday slammed as unacceptable a US plan to arm Syrian Kurdish fighters. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said it was “out of the question” for Turkey to accept any direct or indirect help for the PKK.

The Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG) is seen by Washington as the best ally against Islamic State IS [Daesh] in Syria and the prime attacking force in any assault on Raqqa.

U.S regards the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party PYD and its powerful military wing, YPG, which is part of SDF, as key ally against Islamic State and the most effective fighting force against IS in Syria and has provided them with arms, air support as well as the military advisers. The Kurdish militia has seized swathes of Syria from IS.

Syrian Kurdistan’s ruling PYD has established three autonomous zones, or Cantons of Jazeera, Kobani and Afrin and a Kurdish government across Syrian Kurdistan in 2013. On March 17, 2016 Syria’s Kurds declared a federal region in Syrian Kurdistan.

But Ankara regards the YPG as a terror group and the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which since 1984 has waged an insurgency inside Turkey leaving tens of thousands dead.
