If the regular season and playoff performances of William Nylander and Mitch Marner were not enough for Toronto Maple Leafs fans to be stoked about the club’s future, the pair of rookies have been standouts at the World Championships in France and Germany and will oppose each other in the gold medal game between Sweden and Canada on Sunday.

Nylander scored his tournament-leading seventh goal and added an assist in a 4-1 win over Finland. The 20-year-old winger led Sweden in scoring with 14 points (double the amount of any of his teammates) and is second only Chicago’s Artemi Panarin in tournament scoring with 14 points.

Marner, who has played mostly on a fourth line unit with Tampa’s Brayden Point and Philadelphia’s Travis Konecny, has 11 points (four goals and seven assists), second only to Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon for Team Canada, who rallied with four third-period goals to defeat Russia 4-2 in Cologne, Germany on Saturday.

Winger Miro Aaltonen did not fair as well for Finland in the tournament, going scoreless for Finland in seven games.

Jeremy Bracco played mostly a secondary role for the Windsor Spitfires after being acquired in a trade in January, but provided the winning margin in the first game on the Memorial Cup on Friday, scoring a goal and assist in the Spitfires 3-2 win over Saint John.

The Leafs 2015 second round pick led the Kitchener Rangers in scoring prior to being dealt and ended the OHL season with 83 points (25 goals, 58 assists), but only scored eight times for the Memorial Cup host team in the second half of the season.

Bracco was a key part of Team USA’s gold medal winning effort at the 2017 World Junior and signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Leafs in March.

The 20-year-old will get a look at training camp, but with Nylander, Marner, Connor Brown and Kasperi Kapanen populating the right side, Bracco will likely begin his professional career in the American Hockey League.
