The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned that an unprecedented outbreak of cholera in Yemeni territory threatens to turn the already dire situation of children into a real disaster.
About 70,000 people have been infected with the disease in just one month, killing 600 of them, the WHO's regional director, Geert Kapalari, said in a statement posted on the UNISF website on Friday.
The official added that the number of injured is likely to reach 130 thousand people in the next two weeks, if the spread of the disease at current rates.
The statement pointed out that a large number of children are leaving their lives in silence all day for reasons that can be easily prevented and treated, including cholera, diarrhea and malnutrition.
In his statement, the UN official appealed to the international community to do everything in its power to immediately provide Yemeni doctors with medical supplies, support UN relief efforts in the areas of health, water, sanitation and nutrition, as well as raise awareness within Yemen.
Kapalari said his organization urgently needs $ 16 million to prevent the spread of cholera
