China supports Iran's accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Lee Hui Lay said Monday (June 5th).
The Chinese official told reporters that Iran has observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, has actively participated for a long time in its activities, and has positive contributions to the growth of the bloc.
"China highly appreciates this and welcomes and supports Iran's desire to become an official member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)," he said.
"I think that all parties will continue to study the issue of Iran's accession consciously during this meeting, based on the rules of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization relevant and consensus through consultations."
Lee said Pakistan and India would officially join the organization during the summit, and that the organization was increasingly attracting other countries and expanding its influence.
China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan established the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2001. Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Belarus are observer members of the Organization
