The fifth round of Syrian negotiations began in the Kazakh capital of Astana on Tuesday after the arrival of all delegations participating in the meetings scheduled for today and tomorrow.
On Tuesday, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry announced the arrival of nine representatives of the armed opposition, including representatives of the "Southern Front". Sources close to the negotiations said that the head of the political organization, Army of Islam, Mohammad Allouche will not participate in the negotiations.
The ministry also confirmed the arrival of UN envoy to Syria Stephane de Mistura, noting that bilateral meetings will begin today, among delegations, is scheduled to hold a plenary meeting on Wednesday.
For his part, the head of the Russian delegation to Astana, Alexander Lavrentiv, said that the aim of the Astana talks is to reach an agreement on the areas of reducing the escalation, noting that work is underway to determine them.
The delegation of the Syrian government, headed by Bashar al-Jaafari, arrived in the Kazakh capital on Monday.
