Tillerson: Russia's intervention in the US elections created a situation of "serious mistrust"

    07/08/2017

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Monday that he had informed his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that Russia's intervention in the US presidential election had created a "serious mistrust" between the two countries.

After meeting Lavrov at a regional security meeting in Manila, Tilerson said he had warned his Russian counterpart that Washington was currently considering a response to the Kremlin's decision to reduce the US diplomatic mission in Russia.

"Russia's intervention in the elections was a serious incident and we talked in this panel during the talks we had with Mr. Lavrov yesterday," Tillerson said.

"We tried to help him understand the seriousness of this incident and to what extent it damaged the relations between the United States, the American people and the Russian people, and that created a serious state of mistrust and we have to find a way to address that," he said.

Russia has strongly denied information confirmed by US intelligence agencies that Russia tried in the last presidential election to sway the interests of candidate Donald Trump.

Trump also denied the information, but the ongoing controversy has led to considerable tension between the two countries, recently represented by Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to expel 755 US diplomats.

"I told the secretary of state that we have not yet decided on the response to Russia's decision to expel the American diplomats," Tillerson said.

"I asked a number of explanatory questions to find out the reasons for the diplomatic note we received, but I told them that we would respond by September 1," Putin said, adding that these US diplomats should leave Russia starting Sept. 1. Sf
