Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Joint Operations Command has denied attacks against the Shia-led paramilitary troops in western Anbar.
The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said in a statement on Wednesday that “the Joint Operations Command has denied attacks al-Hashd al-Shaabi [Popular Mobilization Units] conscripts in western Anbar.”
“The accidents circulated by media occurred outside the Iraqi borders,” the statement said adding that “none of the PMUs personnel or any other Iraqi troops were hurt.”
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, who is the commander in chief of the Iraqi armed forces, said on Tuesday that troops have no “red lines” inside the country, adding that the U.S.-led Coalition has no powers to launch air raids without the government’s approval.
The U.S.-led coalition denied on the same day allegations of shelling the militias deployed near Iraqi-Syrian borders after the Sayyid al-Shuhada brigades, one militia of the PMUs, said U.S. troops heavily shelled its positions across the Iraqi-Syrian borders early on Monday leaving huge number of personnel killed and injured.
Abu Alaa al-Wala’i, the secretary general of the militia, said in May that the U.S. jets shelled troops deployed in alBou Kamal region, near Iraqi-Syrian borders.
In November 2016, the Pentagon said the U.S.-led coalition would not provide air support to the PMUs.
