    [ltr]The German newspaper Bild am Sonntag reported on Sunday the seizure of 18,000 Syrian passports and details of its members.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"The investigators have drawn up a list of blank passport numbers printed by the Syrian authorities," the paper quoted classified documents of the federal police and interior ministry as saying. "These passports are original documents that can be filled in with personal details."[/ltr]
    [ltr]In total, German security services say 18,000 passports have been stolen from Syrian government headquarters, including thousands in the possession of other groups.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"Developments related to the refugee situation have revealed that terrorist organizations are taking this opportunity to bring in potential attackers or supporters who can not be spotted in Europe and Germany," a federal police spokeswoman told the newspaper.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Elements in the group behind the Paris bombings, which claimed 130 people in November 2015, have forged Syrian passports.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"False or altered passports are often used to enter illegally without being motivated by terrorist attacks," she said.[/ltr]
    [ltr]According to the documents, "Bild am Sonntag" reported that 8625 passports checked by the German immigration authorities in 2016 were found to be forged.[/ltr]
    [ltr]But the documents did not include any information on how these passports would reach the refugees.[/ltr]
